About India Clean Air Observatory

Official city readings: sources and limits. They aren't state averages; missing readings don't mean clean air. India's AQI differs from foreign estimates.

The Observatory is an independent public-information project, not a government agency. Read the source and limitations alongside each figure.

Project and evidence methodology

The India Clean Air Observatory is an independent public-information project, not a government agency. Its purpose is to make official air-quality information and dated clean-air records easier to find while keeping sources, dates, scope and limitations visible.

Observations

City AQI summaries are attributed to CPCB bulletins and retain their city scope and bulletin date. A city summary is not recast as a state average or station observation. The static public page does not contain live readings; no old, missing, or modelled value is substituted for an unavailable official observation.

Sources and records

Official publications are linked to their issuing agency or original dated record. CPCB observations, DPCC records and CAQM directions are distinct record types and are not merged into one source or measurement series. A linked document verifies what the document says, not necessarily implementation, compliance, or outcome. Reported targets and results remain separately described with their own dates, pollutants, units and periods.

Limits and comparisons

We do not infer pollutant concentrations, station histories, causes of AQI changes or policy effects where the cited source does not establish them. Missing records are coverage gaps in this Observatory, not evidence that no action exists. City, state, regional and station observations are not interchangeable; comparisons require compatible definitions, periods, coverage and units. Counts of records or sorting by AQI are not rankings of government performance.

Use each primary source for the authoritative record and check the issuing agency for current notices. The Observatory's summaries are explanatory aids, not official alerts or medical advice.

Start with CPCB daily city AQI bulletins, DPCC monitoring information and CAQM notices and directions. The official sources directory explains their different scopes and evidence limits.
